My favorite computer right now, despite being the slowest.

I try to keep this one minimal, not only because this machine is quite old, but as some kind of still ongoing what-do-i-really-need-for-my-computing introspection.

• OpenBSD as operating system
• dwm as a window manager
• sxhkd for key bindings and key chords
• st as a terminal emulator
• zsh as interactive shell
• dmenu as program launcher and for use in scripts
• Dillo as preferred web browser and Firefox, which is sadly needed to browse much of the modern web

Ryzen 7 6800U, 32G RAM, 512GB NVME

Since I don’t really game much any more, it’s more than enough compute power wise.
Two monitors, 27in 4k scaled 1.25x, and a 24in 1080p secondary one.

• NixOS as operating system
• sway hyprland Niri river (with kwm) as window manager - yes I like tinkering with window managers
• waybar to display workspaces, datetime, and some system information
• foot as terminal emulator

• ThinkPad T14 (Gen 1 AMD) - second hand, still “setting it up” (ran FreeBSD and Alpine Linux, currently on NixOS)

• Dell Latitude 5410, Intel i5-10310U, 16G RAM, 256G NVME
• currently testing how Fedora Atomic Desktop - I installed Silverblue, but use Niri instead of Gnome - stacks up versus my main system, NixOS, which I now use for about one year

• Fujitsu Q556/2 - with an i3-7100t and 16G of memory - as server in my homelab
• some Synology NAS for media and backups

I regret getting rid of all the other machines I previously owned, especially those that I grew up with …

• Laptop 4 (retired) - MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) - probably my fav piece of hardware of all time - now basically retired after 10 years of use
• Laptop 5 (retired) - ThinkPad T500, Intel Core 2 Duo, P8400 (2,26 GHz); installed Debian 12 a few years ago, and boot it up from time to time for a little nostalgia. Also what a nice time it was replacing (or removing) the battery was that easy.
• iMac with Intel CPU, ca 2007ish - will update this soon (tm) with more details - recently tested FreeBSD on it (all worked well but the WiFi) and AntiX Linux (all works incl. the WiFi)

• Tolino Shine eReader - no online account required to use, just copy epub files over
• Sony WH1000-XM4 Noice Cancelling Headphones
• Suunto Race S watch - only for sports tracking, not interested in smart features - decent enough map navigation which I wanted for long hikes

Since one has to own a mobile phone to function in modern society, I use a Pixel with GrapheneOS running as many Free and Open Source (FOSS) apps as possible.

Some stand-out applications:

• Aegis for 2-factor authentication
• Musicolet (!) as offline music player
• Organic Maps - especially great for hiking with its OSM-based maps
• Fossify Calendar
• DAVx5 syncs contacts and calendars with my homelab server
